Quick-Release Strap Replacement System, The Full Picture

Quick-Release Strap Replacement System

One of the things the majority of watch fans love about the industry is the continual innovation it introduces. Sometimes those include complex things beyond our initial understanding, that take time to adapt to and love. On the other hand, simple yet revolutionary ideas instantly change the way we enjoy our watches. One of those that made a groundbreaking change without rocket science technology behind it was the introduction of quick-release watch straps.

Why is this "small" novelty so important, and what tectonic shift did it cause in the horology world? This address covers all major types of quick-release straps to give the full picture of how impactful it became in such a short period of existence. You'll get the full picture of how these straps became a thing, the mechanics behind them, why the industry and users accepted them so quickly and eagerly, and, finally, what makes each of the brands covered worth mentioning.

Where did it all begin? The first Apple Watch

The pioneering embodiment of the quick-release concept dates back a century, to the 1920s. Over the years, the original idea was adapted and improved as new materials and technological advancements emerged. For modern understanding, use of the quick-release watch strap concept, and particularly its popularisation, the pivotal point in time is 2015, a year when the very first Apple watch came to light.

One of the most prominent original features of the first-generation Apple Watch is its original strap attachment and replacement technique. It features a slide-and-lock strap mechanism that lets the strap be removed and reattached by pressing a rectangular button on the back of the case and sliding the strap to the side. Apart from simplifying the strap replacement process, its prolonged impact on the industry is even more significant.

With all the fame surrounding the premiere of the first-ever Apple Watch, this moment is widely seen as the one that pushed the quick-release strap topic into mainstream conversation of both the industry and the users. How revolutionary and impactful it turned out to be is also evident from the fact that Apple, known for its constant innovations and improvements with every new watch model it releases, has been using the exact same mechanism in all Apple watches ever since.

Garmin QuickFit

Garmin designers began working on their quick-release concept about a year later than Apple's. With a different approach and outcome in mind, Garmin premiered its infamous QuickFit straps in the Fenix 5 series in early 2017. Targeting a different user, Garmin introduced the quick-release concept to the sport and multi-function watch world. QuickFit uses a different mechanism from Apple's slide-and-lock, which enabled Garmin designers to make it compatible with several of their previously released watch series, such as Fenix 3, Bravo, and Quatix 3.

Garmin QuickFit essence is a spring-loaded latch mechanism. Removing a strap simply requires pulling down on the secure latch, which detaches the strap from the special spring bar fixed to the case. Attaching a strap back is equally simple: pressing it down onto the watch spring bar and hearing the "click" means it's safely in place. The following year, Garmin also introduced its quick-release watch strap with sliding spring bars, which became the standard mechanical concept for quick-release straps. Not to worry, Garmin QuickFit is still in production, shoulder to shoulder with their quick-release straps.

Moving into the luxury area, the PAM quick-release system

Although it may not seem that way at first glance, the luxury watches segment is also very attentive to the latest developments. At the same time, some brands invest heavily in their original innovations. Panerai obviously takes both approaches. Their pioneering attempt to create an original easy-strap replacement system debuted as early as 2006, a decade before a quick-release system became available. Entitled the Tool-Lite System, it was not a genuine quick-release system by today's definition, as it required two styluses to change the strap.

The sheer elegance and luxurious feel characteristic of Panerai watches are present in their PAM Click Release System and rubber straps. Soft lines, flawless yet simple operation, everything feels smooth and classy.

Being persistent in their commitment to innovation and well aware of the latest developments, Panerai introduced their original quick-release system in 2016. The modern PAM Click Release System is a genuine quick-release system used on several models in the Luminor watch series, with the Luminor Due being the most prominent.

The PAM quick-release system enables swapping straps with a simple click-and-push style. Once the small push button on the back of the strap is pressed and held, the end link needs to be gently rotated around the spring bar, and the bracelet gently pulled down. The entire strap replacement procedure is completed in a matter of seconds.

Swiss tradition meets contemporary mindset, the IWC EasX-CHANGE

The horology world is a close-knit society, no matter how wide and diverse it is. New and especially practical ideas are always monitored and pondered by attentive manufacturers, regardless of their background. Thus, the IWC's elegant, proprietary addition to quick-release solutions wasn't unexpected, since they have been known for keeping an open mind toward novelties throughout their century-and-a-half-long presence in the watchmaking world.

The IWC EasX-CHANGE system allows users to easily swap straps and bracelets by pushing a button on the underside of the strap

The process of detaching the strap is like Garmin's. A single push on the button on the underside of the strap releases it from the case. However, the concept of the IWC EasX-CHANGE is different; the spring bar remains fixed to the case. Moreover, IWC EasX-CHANGE also features a deployant clasp that can be disassembled from the original strap and reassembled onto the replacement one. It's another very simple procedure that requires no tools. Once that is done, the replacement strap is easily reattached to the fixed spring bar by holding the button down and pushing the strap into the designated position. Once again, hearing the recognisable click means the procedure has been successfully completed.

The change is yet to come

Step by step, or should we say click by click, the quick-release system has been gaining popularity since it appeared. Which comes as no surprise, given its ease of use and the possibilities it opens. Since the system tool is hassle-free, it eliminates the need to send the watch to a service shop for strap replacement.

Moreover, it opens a world of possibilities for customization practically at any time and place. That means being able to switch between different styles, materials, and colors to fit the occasion and mood in the blink of an eye, wherever you are at the moment, as long as you have a replacement strap on you, or a shop nearby, and a minute of spare time. It's an absolute game changer, and we're yet to see the full impact the quick release system is to leave on the horology world.
